Looking Back at Fiscal Year 2023

Over the past year, the Habitat Capital Region community has faced challenges brought on by the pandemic including the rising costs of land, labor, and building materials. However, through it all, Habitat Capital Region donors, volunteers, staff, board members, community partners, and participants have all come together to build healthier and thriving neighborhoods in the Capital Region.

Thanks to you, the lives of 78 people were positively impacted in fiscal year 2023. Four neighbors - including Idalia - achieved their dream of homeownership and are now on a path to stability and financial independence. Additionally, Habitat Capital Region’s Ramp Program exceeded its goal. We provided 38 households like Mattie's with safe, independent access to and from their homes and finishing over 900 ramps since 1994.

Idalia was experiencing a great deal of hardship when she came to Habitat. Her fiancé had passed away, and she was living in a friend’s unfinished basement using a cooler as a fridge.

Now, a year after purchasing her home, Idalia says, “Being inside my home has brought so much security, hope, adventure, and a new beginning to my life that has strengthened me.” Her credit score has improved, and she now feels more relaxed and is able to sleep more soundly since moving into her Habitat home.

Mattie, a ramp recipient, hung onto a flower pot to help her up and down the stairs outside her home. She was worried about the pot slipping and having an accident.

Now, Mattie doesn't have to worry about falling thanks to her new ramp. “I was having a hard time getting up and down the step because of my back and knee problem. I have no more painful experiences going and coming in my house.” Plus, her grandson, De’Angelo, moved into his Habitat home next door and is able to help her as she ages.

Looking Back: Volunteers

Looking back at volunteer numbers and accomplishments from fiscal year 2023.

Volunteers continued to play a significant role in changing lives. They constructed a community pavilion in partnership with Advent House Ministries. Corporate volunteers framed Brittni’s future Habitat home during Women Build. Plus, 361 volunteers contributed over 8,000 service hours to the mission across the organization.
