Thank you for helping to share our message and mission to build a better community!
Who we are
Habitat for Humanity Capital Region is a nonprofit organization that helps people build and improve places to call home in Eaton and Ingham counties, Michigan. We build affordable homeownership opportunities, accessibility ramps, and critical home repairs for qualified low- to moderate-income people in Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties.
Habitat Capital Region subsidizes services based on each client’s income in order to create equitable access to safe and decent housing. To cover the “subsidy gap” that this creates, Habitat Capital Region operates two Habitat ReStores to fund operation costs, applies for grant opportunities, solicits individual donations, builds corporate partnerships, hosts fundraising events, and uses volunteer support where possible.
During our 35+ year history in Greater Lansing, Habitat Capital Region has provided direct housing services to over 1,000 families through affordable homeownership, home repair, and ramp installation programs.
Proper Name
- “Habitat for Humanity Capital Region” when being referred to for the first time
- “Habitat Capital Region” can be used after the full name has been used
- Never use just “Habitat” or “Habitat for Humanity” as that refers only to the parent company, Habitat for Humanity International
Ways to talk about Habitat Capital Region: dos and don’ts
- Habitat for Humanity Capital Region does NOT give away homes. Habitat Capital Region works in partnership with homeowners who put in hours of sweat equity to build their home and who pay an affordable mortgage.
- Habitat Capital Region partners with homeowners to prepare future homeowners for the various responsibilities of homeownership, including learning about personal finances, mortgages, maintenance and upkeep of homes, and much more.
- Volunteers, donors, and supporters build homes with homeowners, NOT for homeowners.
- Through financial education and training, Habitat Capital Region homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and for their families.
- Habitat Capital Region serves both families and individuals in every program. Having children is NOT a program requirement. Habitat partners should be referred to as “partners”, “homebuyers”, or “clients” NOT families in order to help dispel this common misconception.
What we do
Homeownership Program
With the support of community partners, donors, and volunteers, Habitat Capital Region constructs new homes and renovates existing homes alongside Habitat homebuyers. The Homeownership Program is designed to lower barriers to affordable homeownership and create opportunities for those who may not otherwise have access to owning a home.
Critical Home Repair Program
Our Critical Home Repair Program addresses critical, exterior repair needs for low- to moderate-income homeowners in Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties.
By assisting homeowners with these repairs, Habitat Capital Region helps families and individuals maintain the integrity of their homes and prevent further deterioration so they can live in a safe and affordable home for years to come.
Ramp Program
The Ramp Program serves anyone in the Capital Region who has need of a ramp and who meets very basic program requirements. Renters, homeowners, and people living in mobile homes can all qualify for this program.
Volunteer Program
Volunteers are a crucial part of how Habitat Capital Region is able to keep homeownership affordable for our homebuyer partners.
Habitat Capital Region creates meaningful volunteer opportunities for individuals, groups, and corporate team building experiences.
